In a Nutshell...

  • Dyslexia is a language-based disorder.

  • SLPs have expertise in language.

  • In Michigan, SLPs can screen for, assess, and treat dyslexia.

  • SLPs are instrumental in collaborating with educators in providing evidence-based instruction for struggling readers.

SLPs are experts in language. Language provides the foundation for all literacy skills. If a student struggles with reading or writing, the SLP has to look at what area(s) of language need strengthening.
